The Fine Line

As the world ages, lines fade. In the 1950's, one needed to marry before they were well into their mid twenties. Today that line has been pushed back indefinitely to accommodate for careers and ambitious life paths. Lateness and rudeness is easily appeased with a quick text of warning for 'bad traffic' or a 'failed alarm' whilst the hemline of propriety slides further and further up the leg until the 60's idea of a mini skirt is laughable.

Fashion can be seen as the unacknowledged legislator of the world and the new fashion available for men is the testimony for this. The line between women's and men's fashion is fading. As a result fashion is challenging traditional notions of both masculinity and femininity Result? Fabulous. After all, fashion is fun. Its ever changing and expressive. Why not give everyone a chance to wear the opposite sex's fashion?
Anthony Capon from project runway is the embodiment of this new wave of unisex clothing. He challenged the judges in week 8 to accept his choice of a male to model his female design. And as seen below the results were truly fashion forward and fabulous! This is the evidence that fashion really is versatile and can be worn by everyone.

Meanwhile the runways are saturated with an exploration of this new unisex fashion. Yves Saint Laurent in the Spring/Summer collection for 2010 displayed the contrast of a masculine pant with feminine or softer tops as seen below.

Women's fashion has kept the 2008 trend of the tuxedo and taken the shoulder line to a new level. Shoulder widths are now larger than ever conveying both ultimate chic and power. As seen in Emilio De La Morena Autumn 2009/ 2010, these shoulder lines distort the traditional feminine silhouette favouring the masculine emphasis of the shoulders.

So what does one gain from this? The Fine Line between masculinity and femininity has been crossed. Its time to have the confidence to experiment. This seasons clothing is fun, its confident and versatile. So get out there and show off your style.
